Clifton Maybank Solar Farm – 33kV Terminations and Testing

When Premier Power Services was called in at the last minute to assist with the Clifton Maybank Solar Farm, we stepped up to the challenge. The project required the termination and testing of 10 sets of 33kV XLPE single-core cables. Within 48 hours, our skilled team was on-site, ready to deliver.
Challenges Overcome:
  • Material Issues: Our experienced jointers, led by Steven, quickly identified discrepancies in the termination kits provided by the client. They recommended the correct parts, ensuring the project proceeded smoothly.
  • Cable Concerns: Our team noted unusually thin screen wiring during the terminations. Leveraging their expertise, they liaised with the manufacturer and informed the client of the potential implications.
Delivering Excellence:
We completed all terminations to the highest standard and conducted rigorous cable testing, including:
  • Insulation Resistance Testing: Pre- and post-Voltage Withstand Testing at 5kV DC to confirm the cable’s condition.
  • VLF Testing: A Very Low Frequency test at 52kV for 45 minutes, conducted per IEC 6200 standards.
These thorough assessments ensured that the 33kV feeders to the solar farm’s skids were reliable and ready for operation.

Project 2

Swangate 33kV – 20MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

At Swangate in Rotherham, we were entrusted with the cold commissioning of eight Dy11y11 tertiary-wound transformers for a 20MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
Using state-of-the-art Omicron testing equipment, we performed a comprehensive suite of tests to ensure the site could be safely energised.
Tests Conducted:
  • Winding Resistance
  • Ratio Checks
  • Insulation Resistance
  • Vector Group Checks across all three windings
Key Insight:
During commissioning, our team identified and flagged a current transformer (CT) that needed securing, ensuring operational safety and optimal performance for the client.
